Focus Group Discussion on the Legal Aspects of Waste Handling, Management and Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Infrastructure Development

We are pleased to have our Head of Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Practice Group, Kirana Sastrawijaya to speak in a focus group discussion on the legal aspects of waste handling, management and Waste-to-Energy (WTE) infrastructure development, coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development and hosted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). This event stems from the urgent need for effective waste management, driven by the increasing volume of waste resulting from rapid economic activity and population growth and whether certain adjustment to Presidential Regulation No. 35 of 2018 on the Acceleration of the Development of Environmentally Friendly WtE Facilities may be required for promoting large-scale WTE projects.

The forum was attended by distinguished speakers, among others, representatives from PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur, PT PLN (Persero), IFC, MUFG Bank, the Global Waste to Energy Research Council, and WTE developer – who shared and discussed their insights and experiences on the challenges of implementing WtE projects in Indonesia, as well as the technological and financing aspects involved.

Drawing from her extensive experiences of representing lenders, sponsors and utility in WTE development in Indonesia, among other things in Solo, Surabaya, Sunter, and Palembang WTEs projects, Kirana shared the legal considerations in developing of waste to energy projects, along with the legal challenges and bottlenecks encountered in WtE initiatives. Kirana also provided insights on the mitigation strategies for all stakeholders involved.

We look forward to continuing our contributions in accelerating WTE projects initiatives in the future!
