Coal Metal Asia Vol. 164 – Carbon Capture and Storage Worldwide: Spotlight on Indonesia and comparative perspectives

We are excited to announce the publication of our latest newsletter, “Carbon Capture and Storage Worldwide: Spotlight on Indonesia and Comparative Perspectives,” CoalMetal Asia Volume 164.

This newsletter discusses Indonesia’s first comprehensive regulation governing CCS activities outside of those conducted ancillary to oil and gas operations, with MEMR Reg 2/2023 setting out a regulatory framework for CCS and CCUS operations ancillary to upstream oil and gas business activities and PR 14/2024 providing a framework to govern CCS operations outside of oil and gas working areas. Further to the discussion on Indonesia, we explore how CCS/CCUS is being implemented in the United States, Australia, various countries in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and other Asian countries, offering a comprehensive view of global perspectives.

In this newsletter, our senior power and renewable partner Kirana Sastrawijaya, along with our senior projects and extractive industries partner Reggy Firmansyah, and our dedicated associates – Davin Rizky, Angela Vania Rustandi, Bidadari Respaty, Faiq Rachim, and Valerie Vanya highlighted – examined the critical provisions of MEMR Reg 2/2023 and PR 14/2024 and key points that need to be considered by various stakeholders in the CCS implementation, including licensing requirements, the CCS project lifecycle, and potential business scheme.

We are pleased to be joined in authoring this newsletter with Simmons & Simmons LLP, led by David Blumental, a global law firm with a long history of supporting transactions and financings in Indonesia and on behalf of Indonesian parties overseas.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to CoalMetal Asia Magazine, one of Indonesia’s prominent mining business magazines, for featuring our publication in their magazine.
