Webinar – Resolving Shareholder Disputes: Domestic and International Perspectives
Shareholder disputes commonly arise in Southeast Asia. Given how businesses are structured across jurisdictions, disputes often become cross-border and may involve parallel proceedings. Departing from this, UMBRA – Strategic Legal Solutions (UMBRA), jointly with the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) and Osborne Clarke (OC), held the Webinar on Resolving Shareholder Disputes: Domestic and International Perspectives on 7 October 2020.
The Webinar was moderated by UMBRA’s Counsel, Junianto James Losari. During the discussion, the experts in their respective fields, Mr Wee Meng Chuan (CEO, SIMC), Ms Yvette Anthony (Counsel, OC), Ms Melati Siregar (Partner, UMBRA), and Mr Greg Fullelove (Partner, OC) shared their experience and strategies in resolving shareholder disputes through mediation, arbitration and litigation in Indonesia and other jurisdictions. According to the speakers, the dispute resolution methods should not be necessarily be viewed as competitors because they can complement one another. They also expect that the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to the increase of new cases in the future. The Webinar was attended by international participants, ranging from university students, in-house counsels, and lawyers.
